 United Methodist Women is a community of women who nurture and encourage one another in their spiritual growth, personal leadership and transformation. The UMW of First United Methodist Church of Elmhurst is open to all women.
Our activities and actions are driven by our common belief in the PURPOSE. The PURPOSE is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative and supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through global ministries of the church.
The Executive Committee meets regularly to develop innovative programs for our members. General meetings are held quarterly, with additional circle group meetings that meet monthly. Activities our members have enjoyed include:
- Local mission project with Family Shelter Services Agency of DuPage offering multiple volunteer opportunities for our members arranged over the summer and fall months. December holiday gifts are collected for their annual Holiday Shoppe.
- Hosting the Northern Illinois Conference Annual Conference Meeting for 200 women in October 2008 featuring our own First Church handbell choir
- Evening dinner and musical program
- Friday night Film Study
- Potato Bar luncheon to raise money for Bethany Alzheimer’s
- Participating in regional opportunities ranging form Elgin District meetings to leadership trainings, national retreats and and the summer School of Christian Mission
- Designing and implementing a Thank Offering Sunday to better reach all members of our church wishing to support the United Methodist Women
- Purchasing study books and other reading materials for our church library
- Supporting 10 mission projects worldwide
- Annual events within our church which have included the Holly House Bazaar fundraiser in November, and an Advent Holiday Musical Program in December
